Hyderabad's food licensing has an unusual overlap with its pharmaceutical base. Nutraceuticals, health supplements, foods for special dietary use and similar products sit under FSSAI rather than under drug licensing, and businesses arriving from a pharma background frequently underestimate that. For these operators the licence is entangled with product-level compliance in a way that a restaurant's is not.
Telangana's food safety administration operates through the Commissioner of Food Safety and district officers. For nutraceutical and supplement manufacturers, documentary scrutiny tends to be closer than for general food premises, because the product categories carry their own regulatory requirements alongside the licence.
Nutraceutical and health supplement manufacturing, a large restaurant and hospitality market including the substantial biryani and bakery trade, packaged food manufacturing, and a growing quick-commerce dark store network across the western corridor.
The specific Hyderabad point is that a nutraceutical business holds one licence but two compliance positions. The licence authorises the business. The product categories on it authorise what may be made, and those categories are governed by separate regulations with their own requirements. Things go wrong here when a manufacturer has added a product line since the licence was granted and files a straight renewal rather than a modification, ending up with a valid licence that does not cover part of what is coming off the line. For this sector the exercise should always start with a check of what is actually being produced against what the licence actually permits.
One correction worth making first, because most published guidance has not caught up. FSSAI renewal was abolished on 10 March 2026. A licence granted under the amended regulations is valid and subsisting until it is suspended, cancelled or surrendered, and carries no expiry date at all. If your certificate still shows one, it was issued before the change, it belongs to the old cycle, and everything below about late fees and the 180 day boundary applies to it. If it does not, what binds you instead is the annual fee and the applicable return, because missing either one deems the licence suspended and you may not trade while it is. Check which of the two you are in on FoSCoS rather than from the certificate in the folder.

Nutraceuticals, health supplements and foods for special dietary uses fall under FSSAI rather than drug licensing, though the product categories carry their own regulatory requirements on composition, labelling and claims. Businesses coming from a pharmaceutical background often assume otherwise. The important check is whether the product categories on your licence still match what you are actually manufacturing.
Not by itself. Adding food categories is a modification, and a straight renewal carries forward the categories already on the licence. The result is a licence that looks valid and does not authorise part of your production, which is exactly what an inspection surfaces. Under the current framework, where the licence no longer expires at all, there is no renewal event to catch it either, so the modification has to be filed on its own initiative.
Generally yes, because a licence attaches to a premises. A storage or distribution point is a separate premises from a production kitchen and needs its own licensing position, each carrying its own annual fee. Quick-commerce operators expanding rapidly are particularly prone to opening locations faster than the compliance schedule is updated, which is how lapses happen in this segment.
