GST Registration in India

GST registration is required once aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods-only suppliers or ₹20 lakh for service providers in most states (₹20 lakh and ₹10 lakh in some north-eastern and hill states), and from the first sale for businesses covered by compulsory registration. The government charges no fee: CorporateWalla files Form GST REG-01 for you, coordinates Aadhaar or biometric verification and tracks the ARN to your GSTIN certificate.

GST Registration Made Simple

GST registration creates a GSTIN for a business or other person who is required or chooses to register under GST. Registration requirements depend on aggregate turnover, nature of supplies, state, business model and specific compulsory-registration provisions.

The correct approach is not to rely only on a turnover number. A business should first determine whether Section 22, Section 23, Section 24 and relevant notifications apply to its facts.

Who May Need GST Registration?

GST registration may be required where a person crosses the applicable turnover threshold or falls within a category requiring compulsory registration.

Examples can include:

  • Businesses making taxable supplies above the applicable threshold.
  • Persons covered by compulsory-registration provisions.
  • Certain inter-State suppliers, subject to applicable exceptions and notifications.
  • Certain e-commerce operators and suppliers using electronic commerce platforms, depending on the applicable provisions.
  • Casual taxable persons and non-resident taxable persons where applicable.
  • Input Service Distributors and other specified categories.
  • Businesses choosing voluntary registration.

Important: GST registration rules have exceptions and state-specific/transaction-specific conditions. The applicability should be checked against the current GST law and notifications for the business.

GST Registration Limit: State-wise Thresholds

The limit is tested on aggregate turnover for the whole PAN across India: taxable, exempt and export supplies plus inter-State supplies between your own branches, excluding GST itself. Once it crosses the figure below for your state, you have 30 days to apply.

Where you supply fromGoods onlyServices, or goods and services
Most states and UTs (including Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, J&K)₹40 lakh₹20 lakh
Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Puducherry, Sikkim, Telangana, Uttarakhand₹20 lakh₹20 lakh
Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura₹20 lakh₹10 lakh

The ₹40 lakh goods limit (Notification 10/2019-Central Tax, from 1 April 2019) does not apply to suppliers of ice cream and other edible ice, pan masala, or tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes; they must register at ₹20 lakh.

Registration required regardless of turnover (Section 24)

  • Persons making inter-State taxable supplies of goods
  • Casual taxable persons and non-resident taxable persons
  • Persons liable to pay tax under reverse charge
  • Electronic commerce operators required to collect tax at source, and certain persons supplying through them
  • Persons required to deduct TDS under GST
  • Input Service Distributors
  • Agents making taxable supplies on behalf of other taxable persons
  • Suppliers of online information and database access services from outside India to unregistered persons in India

GST Registration Online Process on the Portal

  • 1. Part A of REG-01 — Enter legal name as per PAN, state, PAN, mobile number and email. Both are verified by OTP and a Temporary Reference Number (TRN) is generated.
  • 2. Part B of REG-01 — Log in with the TRN and fill business details, promoters, authorised signatory, principal and additional places of business, goods and services (HSN/SAC), and upload documents. Opt in to Rule 14A here if eligible.
  • 3. Aadhaar authentication — Each promoter or partner and the primary authorised signatory gets an authentication link. In states where it applies, the portal may instead send a link to book a slot at a GST Suvidha Kendra for biometric authentication and photograph.
  • 4. Sign and submit — The application is signed with DSC (mandatory for companies and LLPs) or EVC, and the Application Reference Number (ARN) is generated.
  • 5. Verification — The officer approves, or raises a query in REG-03. A reply goes in REG-04 with documents.
  • 6. GSTIN and certificate — On approval the GSTIN is issued and the certificate in Form GST REG-06 can be downloaded from the portal.
  • 7. Bank account — Add bank account details within 30 days of the grant or before filing GSTR-1 or IFF, whichever is earlier (Rule 10A).

If you are selected for biometric authentication, carry original Aadhaar and PAN and the originals of every document uploaded with the application, along with the appointment confirmation email.

Worked Example: Do You Need to Register?

Case 1. A Kolkata garment trader sells only within West Bengal. Turnover in FY 2025-26 is ₹32 lakh. West Bengal applies the ₹40 lakh goods limit, so registration is not yet compulsory. If its FY 2026-27 turnover crosses ₹40 lakh on 15 December 2026, the application is due by 14 January 2027.

Case 2. The same trader starts shipping one order to a buyer in Assam. Inter-State supply of goods triggers compulsory registration under Section 24, so the ₹40 lakh limit no longer helps. Register before the first inter-State invoice.

Case 3. A Bengaluru design consultant bills ₹18 lakh a year to Indian clients. The services limit in Karnataka is ₹20 lakh, so registration is voluntary. If her B2B clients want to claim input tax credit, voluntary registration under Rule 14A can make sense because her monthly output tax will be far below ₹2.5 lakh.

Illustrative cases. Actual liability depends on all supplies made under the same PAN and on any exemption notifications that apply.

GST Registration Eligibility Check

Before filing, review:

  • PAN and constitution of the business.
  • State and principal place of business.
  • Aggregate turnover and nature of supplies.
  • Whether supplies are taxable, exempt or non-taxable.
  • Inter-State and intra-State supply pattern.
  • E-commerce activity and marketplace model.
  • Reverse-charge and other compulsory-registration provisions.
  • Existing GST registrations under the same PAN.
  • HSN/SAC classification relevant to the business.
  • Whether voluntary registration is commercially useful.

Typical documents depend on the constitution and facts of the applicant.

Is GST Registration Free?

The GST registration application itself generally does not carry a government application fee. Professional assistance is separate.

CorporateWalla currently advertises GST registration as free with eligible packages and lists paid standalone plans. Government charges, if applicable to a particular requirement, should be shown separately rather than represented as professional fees.

GSTIN and GST Certificate

A GSTIN is the identification number issued after successful registration. The registration certificate can be downloaded from the GST system after registration is granted.

The GSTIN should be checked against the legal name, registration state and other registration particulars before starting invoicing and compliance.

GST Registration for Different Businesses

Startups

New companies, LLPs and other startups should determine GST applicability alongside incorporation, bank-account setup, invoicing and accounting.

Freelancers and Professionals

GST applicability depends on the nature and location of services, turnover and applicable provisions. Do not assume that every freelancer below a threshold is automatically exempt from all GST registration obligations.

E-commerce Sellers

Marketplace selling can create GST considerations that depend on the nature of supply, platform model and applicable law. Review the current compulsory-registration rules before onboarding.

Service Businesses

Consultants, agencies, IT businesses and other service providers should evaluate aggregate turnover, place of supply and registration requirements before raising GST invoices.

Businesses Operating in Multiple States

GST registration is state/UT based. Businesses with operations or supplies across multiple states should review whether additional registrations are required.

GST Registration vs GST Return Filing

GST registration and GST return filing are different services.

GST Registration creates or obtains the GST registration/GSTIN when registration is required or voluntarily chosen.

GST Return Filing is the recurring compliance after registration, including applicable returns such as GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B and other applicable filings.

A business should plan the post-registration compliance calendar before obtaining GSTIN.

Common GST Registration Mistakes

  • Using an address proof that does not match the declared premises.
  • Selecting an incorrect business constitution.
  • Incorrect legal name or PAN details.
  • Incomplete authorised-signatory information.
  • Wrong HSN/SAC classification.
  • Ignoring additional places of business.
  • Failing to review existing registrations under the same PAN.
  • Assuming turnover alone determines registration.
  • Treating voluntary registration as risk-free without understanding its compliance consequences.
  • Filing without planning the subsequent return, invoice and accounting process.

What Happens After GST Registration?

After receiving GST registration, the business may need to:

  • Set up GST-compliant invoicing.
  • Display/communicate GST registration details as required.
  • File applicable GST returns on time.
  • Reconcile sales, purchases and input tax credit.
  • Monitor e-invoicing applicability where relevant.
  • Monitor e-way bill requirements where relevant.
  • Update registration particulars when business details change.
  • Maintain supporting books and records.
  • Track notices, communications and compliance deadlines.

Registration is the beginning of GST compliance, not the end.
