Zoho Books vs Tally Prime: Which Should You Actually Use?

Cloud versus desktop, pricing, GST and e-invoicing, and who each one actually suits. An honest comparison for Indian businesses choosing accounting software.

Since QuickBooks left India, this is a two-horse race for most businesses. Both are good. They suit different companies, and the wrong choice is expensive to reverse once you have three years of data in it.

First, why QuickBooks is not on this list

Intuit withdrew QuickBooks from India. New sign-ups ended 1 July 2022, existing subscribers lost access on 30 April 2023, and since 1 July 2023 there has been no access to QuickBooks products in India at all.

If you have a US entity, QuickBooks US remains the right choice for it, and an Indian accounting team can work inside that subscription because it is QuickBooks US rather than QuickBooks India. For Indian books, it is not an option.

The short answer

Choose Zoho Books if you want cloud access, you have a distributed team or an accountant elsewhere, you sell online, or you want automation and integrations. Choose Tally Prime if you have heavy inventory, complex manufacturing, a traditional accounts team that already knows Tally, or you deal with vendors and auditors who expect Tally data.

The five things that actually decide it

1. Where is your accounting done?

If your accountant is in a different city, cloud wins outright. Zoho Books means everyone looks at the same live file. Tally means someone emails a backup, someone else works on it, and versions diverge.

2. How complex is your inventory?

If you manufacture, assemble, or carry serial-tracked or batch-tracked stock, Tally is meaningfully better. Zoho handles straightforward stock; it is not built for a factory.

3. Do you sell online?

Zoho integrates with marketplaces, payment gateways and shipping providers. Tally will need manual imports or middleware. Marketplace settlement reconciliation is hard enough without fighting your software for the data.

4. What does your team already know?

Tally familiarity in India is close to universal. If you have an accounts person of fifteen years standing, moving them to Zoho is a training project, not a software switch. Budget for it as one.

5. Who else needs your data?

Auditors, bankers and acquirers are all comfortable with Tally data. Zoho exports cleanly, but Tally is still the default expectation in a lot of rooms.

E-invoicing applies to both

If your aggregate turnover exceeds ₹5 crore, e-invoicing is mandatory and both platforms support it. That threshold has been in place since 1 August 2023 and is tested at PAN level across all your registrations.

Above ₹10 crore, you also cannot report a document to the IRP more than 30 days after the document date, effective 1 April 2025.

One live point: from 1 August 2026, Ship-to GSTIN became mandatory in the IRN and e-way bill APIs. If your software has not been updated for it, IRN generation is failing right now, on either platform.

What about cost?

Zoho is a monthly or annual subscription per organisation, scaling with users and features. Tally is a licence, single or multi-user, with an optional annual subscription for updates. We deliberately do not publish current figures here, because vendor pricing moves and a stale number is worse than no number.

Over three to five years the totals land closer together than the sticker prices suggest. Do not choose on price alone; the switching cost later dwarfs the difference.

Can you switch later?

Yes, and we do Tally to Zoho migrations regularly. Masters, opening balances and transaction history all move.

But it is a project, not an export. The chart of accounts has to be mapped, opening balances have to be verified against the last audited figures, and there is always a cleanup element. Better to choose properly than to switch at year two.

Our honest view

  • For a new business with straightforward inventory, a distributed team, or online sales: Zoho Books.
  • For manufacturing, distribution, heavy stock, or an established accounts team: Tally Prime.
  • For an Indian company with a US entity: Zoho or Tally for the Indian books, QuickBooks for the US ones. They do not need to be the same platform, and forcing one across both usually produces a worse outcome than running two.

We work in whichever you choose, and will tell you which fits before you buy anything
