Standard Format of a Net Worth Certificate

The format prescribed by ICAI is as follows:

1. CA Letterhead

The certificate must be on the CA's letterhead with: CA firm name, ICAI firm registration number, address, phone, email, website (optional).

CA's internal reference number for tracking.

6. Reference Date

The date as on which the net worth is computed (e.g., "as on 31 March 2025" or "as on 15 June 2026").

Common Errors in Format

  • No UDIN on the certificate (mandatory per ICAI)
  • Book value used for property (banks / embassies want market value)
  • Missing supporting document references (no bank statement references, no valuation report references)
  • No date or place of issue
  • Not signed by a practicing CA (ex-CA, retired CA, or non-CA signature)
  • Wrong reference date (asking for "today's date" when the bank needs the FY-end date)
  • Net worth in only figures, not words
  • Notes + assumptions missing

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the format prescribed by ICAI?

A: Yes. ICAI prescribes a standard format for Net Worth Certificate. The certificate must include: CA letterhead, UDIN, name + PAN of the individual, reference date, statement of assets + liabilities, computation of net worth, CA signature + seal.

Q: Can I prepare the certificate myself?

A: You can prepare the draft, but only a practicing CA can sign the certificate. Self-prepared certificates are not accepted by banks, embassies, or government bodies.

Q: Is the net worth in INR or foreign currency?

A: INR. If the recipient needs foreign currency (e.g., embassy), the net worth is mentioned in INR with a note "approximately USD X" at the prevailing exchange rate.

Q: What is UDIN and why is it important?

A: UDIN (Unique Document Identification Number) is a 15-digit code generated by ICAI for every document signed by a CA. It is verified on the ICAI UDIN portal (udin.icai.org). Banks, embassies, and government bodies check UDIN to ensure the certificate is genuine.
